Book of Hours - privately owned book of prayers
Hours of the Cross
As
medieval manuscript production moved from the monastery to commercial
guilds, wealthy citizens were able to commission Books of Hours
to suit their tastes and budgets. This leaf must have been fairly
expensive to produce because it is richly illuminated with gold
leaf. Due to the transparency of vellum, scribes carefully aligned
the leaves, stems, and flowers of the borders on both sides in order
to prevent blurring. Note, however, that part of the border on the
other side still shows through the vellum.
