Selections from Luke

This leaf is made of uterine vellum, which is produced from the skin of an unborn calf. Uterine vellum was the best writing material available for manuscript production. The vellum of this leaf is so fine that it is nearly transparent, demonstrating its high quality. This leaf is from a manuscript that would have fit into its owner’s pocket. Breviaries were generally decorative, but the legibility of this one allows for easy reading. This leaf has been well-used and is believed to be from a book buried with its owner.
