Notes: | John Andrew Forin, a Presbyterian, Liberal and law student, volunteered to serve with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada when the Riel Rebellion broke out. The diary covers the period from 26 March to 27 July 1885. It covers his enlistment, the trip to the West, the march to Battleford, the conditions of the countryside, the monotony of camp life, the battle at Cut Knife Hill, the release of the prisoners captured by Poundmaker, the campaign to capture Big Bear, and the trip back to Winnipeg by riverboat. |
