| Notes: | Captain Alfred Hamlyn Todd was commissioned to raise a company of sharpshooters from Ottawa as part of the forces sent to crush the Riel Resistance. The diary that he kept from March 28 to July 19, 1885 has been amended and altered by his recollections some 40 years after the event. Nevertheless, Todd's manuscript provides an interesting account of Ottawa's reaction to the outbreak of the Resistance, the method of recruiting and training volunteers for service, the trip to the North-West, the battles at Cut Knife and Batoche, the capture of Poundmaker and Big Bear, the Sharpshooters' dealings with the Indians they met, camp life, and their trip back to Ottawa. |
