Author: Giraud, Marcel
Title: Métis Settlement in the North-West Territories
Notes: A translation of a chapter entitled "L'exode vers l'Ouest" from Marcel Giraud's Le Métis Canadien. Son role dans l'histoire des provinces de l'Ouest (Paris, 1945). Giraud argues that after the Resistance of 1869-70, the Métis moved to the North West Territories in order to escape white settlement and to establish a refuge in which they could pursue their customary occupations. The chapter not only describes the exodus, but also provides the background to the Resistance of 1885.
