Notes: R.C. Laurie was the son of P.G. Laurie, the owner and editor of The Saskatchewan Herald. Richard had studied railway engineering and surveying at the Royal Military College from January 1877 to December 1880. He arrived in the North-West at the end of 1880. His reminiscences describe the conditions near Battleford, the discontent of the Indians and Métis and his experiences as a Lieutenant in "F" Company, 90th Winnipeg Rifles, in General Middleton's column.
