Riel kept four diaries during the period from June 1884, when he was a school teacher at a Jesuit mission in Montana, to the Rebellion of 1885 and his imprisonment. There are numerous gaps in the diaries, but they still provide a record of his thinking during a critical period of Canadian history. The diaries reveal that Riel was a complex and contradictory person who did not want to live a life as an obscure exile.
