Based on Stanley's Ph.D. thesis, completed at Oxford in 1936. It is a detailed analysis of the causes and consequences of both Riel rebellions. His thesis is that the rebellions were not part of the traditional hostilities between French Catholic Quebec and English Protestant Ontario, but rather a clash between primitive and civlised peoples.
