Vol. III has six chapters on the Resistance of 1885 which examine the causes, the military engagements and the capture, trial and execution of Riel. Begg argues that the Resistance was caused by the land surveys, the lack of food for Indians, and the government's failure to deal with the grievances and problems arising in the West. He saw Riel as a man with selfish interests, concerned with material gain. Begg raises a number of criticisms of the government's handling of the Resistance. | |
