Lalonde argues that because of their ignorance of the prairie region and their insensitivity to the plight of the Indians and the Métis, the federal government and colonization companies exacerbated the tensions which caused the 1885 Resistance. The Resistance worked to the advantage of the colonization companies who were seeking a way out of their unprofitable contracts. The government was able to use the Resistance as a reason to finish the railway. It was only the Indians and Métis who lost. |
