| Sprague maintains that the Canadian government used both formal and informal means to force most Red River Métis to move from Manitoba to Saskatchewan during the 1870s. He examines Riel's role in fighting for Métis land claims and his attempts to establish a provincial government in order to bring Manitoba into Confederation.
