After Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), Scottish essayist. The original Carlyle (sometimes now called Old Carlyle) was at 26-7-W2 .J.G. (Jack) Turriff, also the first postmaster 1883-89 and later an MP, opened a store there in 1882 on Hudson's Bay Co. lands. He selected the name to honour a niece of Thomas Carlyle, Annie Marie Yeoward, who married Donald Crerar Cameron and homesteaded and raised a family near Arcola. The community moved to CPR station site in 1900-01."
