Indian Head, Sask: view from exp. farm.

"Town (Post Office 1882- ) east of Regina on the [highway] #1, headquarters of the RM of INDIAN HEAD No. 156.

The name is a translation of the Cree phrase iyiniwistikwânaciy, 'Indian head hill', and the Nakota refer to the low-lying hills to the southeast of the modern town as winchapaghen, 'skull mountainettes'. A Cree and/or Nakota band which lived in the hills was wiped out by smallpox (likely in the epidemic of 1837-38) to the point that their skeletons, including 'Indian heads', littered the area."
