Journals & Magazines

The University of Saskatchewan Library provides access to LGBTQ periodical literature in a variety of formats – through subscription and preservation of paper copies, through the purchase of microfilm resource collections and through licensed digital access.

The University of Saskatchewan Library preserves one of Canada’s largest collections of journals and magazines dealing with sexual diversity. This collection includes many important early titles, especially from the 1960s and 1970s, not represented in other Canadian libraries. The Special Collections unit receives and provides access to many magazines and organizational newsletters published across Canada.

An enormous number of historical periodicals of LGBT interest have been microfilmed and included in the research collection The Gay Rights Movement. This constitutes one of the primary resources for the study of lesbian and gay history in the United States, Canada and around the world. The University of Saskatchewan Library is exceptional in Canada in being able to acquire all the component series of this collection. Periodicals and newsletters are the focus of Series 8 through 11 which reproduce holdings from the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Historical Society (San Francisco), the Lesbian Herstory Archives (Brooklyn), and the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (Toronto). Series 11 International Gay and Lesbian Periodicals and Newsletters from the CLGA includes 87 microfilm reels devoted to older Canadian LGBT publications.

An important resource for those interested in gay and lesbian life and history on the prairies is Perceptions, once the longest continuously published LGBT newsmagazine in Canada. Perceptions was published in Saskatoon from 1983 to 2013, and included content from all the prairie provinces. We are happy to host on this site a comprehensive, fully searchable index to the journal (1983-2004) compiled by Alex Spence.
