Memoirs — Laura BuddHow Small is Too Small of a Community to Transition In?Around 2011 Brice Budd made the decision to reveal that her true gender was female and to begin living an open life as a woman in her farm community. She was apprehensive as to how this change would be received by her friends and neighbors in rural Saskatchewan. With the help of her wife and family and much thought and investigation Laura Budd is now one of Saskatchewan’s most active and eloquent transwomen and an effective advocate for trans rights. She led the successful legal fight challenging the provincial government regulation that proof of gender reassignment surgery was required for changes of gender on birth certificates and other Saskatchewan documents. In response to her human rights complaint the government agreed in 2016 that evidence of the procedure would no longer be needed by adults. This memoir of transitioning in small town Saskatchewan was originally published on the Moose Jaw Pride website in February 2016.
