Abstract:
The North Vietnamese Government in early January 1967 was still giving considerable publicity to the alleged bombing on 13-14 December 1966 within the city limits of Hanoi. Roads and rail lines into Hanoi seemed to be in good condition although the train ran irregularly. About 50 percent of the Hanoi population, mostly children and jobless, has been evacuated. Several government offices, primarily in the Ministry of Education, have been evacuated and those remaining vary their office hours. The latest harvest was bad although the Government has not published any statistics. Food supply is handled through local cooperatives and the rice ration is 13.5 kilograms per person monthly. The people appear well fed and healthy but are shabbily dressed. Few consumer goods are available though quantities of antibiotics and vitamins are available. Salaries are low with a professional man receiving 90 dong per month.
