Abstract:
The Situation in South Vietnam [political situation: new coup attempt by Col. Thao, in collusion with the Viet Cong, has been thwarted; Chief of State Suu has refused to approve cabinet changes. Economic situation: VC have cut power transmission lines and restricted rice distribution. Military situation: VC operations have remained at the same level; govt. forces have increased operations; casualty and weapons loss ratio favors the VC; province pacification activities have concentrated on refugee support. Third country developments: South Vietnam is seeking support for its attendance of the Afro-Asian Conference; Philippines plans to send an engineering battalion and Australia an infantry battalion.
