Abstract:
In mid July 1969, a force of approximately 1,000 militia and Cambodian Army (FARK) personnel encircled a wooded area just north of Prey, Kompong Cham where a group of about 100 Khmer Rouge had taken refuge after their camp was discovered by FARK troops, who burned their huts and confiscated 650 kilos (1,320 pounds) of rice. By encircling the Khmer Rouge, the FARK troops hoped to cut off surrounding villages and block access routes, thereby stopping any supplies from reaching the area. Some of the Khmer Rouge, however, slipped through the encirclement into Kratie Province, and were seen crossing into Kratie from Kompong Cham near Chhlong. On 23 August the Khmer Rouge attacked FARK engineer troops who were repairing the highway between Bo Kham and La Bansiek, Ratanakiri Province. While FARK engineers sufferred no casualties, one Khmer Rouge was killed and a Chinese-made light machine gun was captured.
