Abstract:
By late June 1969, the main highway from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville had been unsafe at night for at least one month. During the day the highway was patrolled by Cambodian Army (FARK) troops. At night, however, the area between the 60 kilometer mark(i.e., 60 kilometers south of Phnom Penh and about 15 kilometers beyond Kompong Speu) and the 110 kilometer mark after the Picnil Pass, was especially vulnerable to Khmer Rouge incursions, and at least one embassy in Phnom Penh had adivised its staff not to use the road after dark.
