Abstract:
On 8 November 1973, a fairly large-scale battle took place near the town of Kep, Kampot District, Kampot Province, Cambodia, between Cambodian Army (FANK) forces and Khmer insurgent (KI) troops. The KI troops were Battalions A, D and F; and prior to and during the battle the FANK forces of two battalions were reinforced by the 20th Infantry Regiment from Kompong Som District, Koh Kong Province. There was no official word from either side on casualties but by the morning of 9 November KI soldiers started showing up in the villages in the district around Kep to draft the services of every able-bodied male to act as laborers to carry food, supplies and wounded KI soldiers. All that day, the forced laborers moved wounded KI troops from Kep to waiting trucks and tractors which in turn appeared to transport the wounded toward Sre Chea, Kompong Trach District, Kampot Province and Prey Pi, 3-5 kilometers north of Sre Chea, where the KI have a hospital. On this date, approxiately 200 KI troops appeared to have been killed and about 370 wounded were moved from the area in the direction of Sre Chea. The majority of these casualties came from KI Battalion D and F. These battalions reportedly were made up mostly of young monks who were not experienced in battle. This, nevertheless, was the KI force which was placed in the front and which bore the brunt of the contact with the FANK troops.
