Abstract:
The pace of Communist military activity slackened during the past week, both in the number and in the intensity of actions reported, although the level of Communist-initiated incidents remains well above that of 1965 generally. Most of the significant operations during the week were conducted by allied forces, which failed to engage the Viet Cong in any major engagements but did capture substantial quantities of supplies and weapons. The South Vietnamese Government last week devoted much of its effort toward plans to announce, prior to the lunar new year, its program in the pacification, economic and political fields in conjunction with a major psychological warfare program aimed at the Viet Cong. Beneath this activity, however, signs continued of some friction within the military coalition, and there were new rumors of a coup-assassination plot linking at least one member of the Directorate with dissatisfied former officers and civilians.
