Abstract:
A total of thirty-five military officers were arrested on charges of corruption, but actually the arrests were made because of their involvement in coup planning on behalf of Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Thieu, Chief of State, and Lieutenant General Nguyen Huu Co, Deputy Prime Minister. Among those arrested was Colonel Vu Ngoc Tuan, Commander of the Quang Trung Training Center. One reason for the removal of Co was his recent intrigues against Thieu and Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky, whom Co had been playing off against each other for the past few years. Colonel Tuan was relieved of his command with the complete approval of Thieu, who said that Tuan's excellent combat record while he served under Thieu a few years ago should in no way serve to shield Tuan's corrupt practices as Commandant of the Quang Trung Training Center.
