Abstract:
Truong Tien Dat, Secretary General of the Constituent Assembly, asked General Nguyen Bao Tri who would be the military candidate in the forthcoming presidential elections. General Tri replied that it still wasn't decided, but that one thing was certain: it would be either General Ky or General Thieu. General Tri added that much depended on General Thieu's position. If General Thieu decided not to be a candidate, then the matter was resolved and General Ky would be the unanimous choice. Dat pointed out that since the majority of the military council appeared to favor General Ky, they could resolve the matter by voting against General Thieu's candidacy if the Chief of State decided to run for office. General Tri replied that such action would be "difficult" to take, because there was a hierarchy in the army and the military were inclined to reserve first priority for the presidency to General Thieu. It was a difficult thing for subordinate officers to vote against a superior officer with General Thieuu's rank (Lieutenant General). General Tri said that the question would be put to General Thieu, and that if he decided not to run for office, the support (by the military council) would automatically go to General Ky.
