Abstract:
Before formally presenting his candidacy for the presidency, Chief of State Nguyen Van Thieu plans to resign from the Armed Forces and as Chief of State. By this action, Thieu hopes to force Prime Minister Ky to withdraw from the race while wining civilian sympathy for himself. Thieu dislikes Ky so much that if he (Thieu) cannot win the presidency himself, he prefers to see a civilian win rather than Ky. Thieu definitely intends to build a political front for his campaign and is entrusting the task to his closest political advisors, all of whom are civilians. He has not yet selected his running mate but is considering Foreign Minister Tran Van Do.
