U of S Ege MS 19
Early 1300s
Judith 1-2

This leaf has a beautiful historiated initial “A” in the lower half of the left hand column. A historiated initial is an ornamental letter decorated with figures of men or animals. This one features a bear’s head on the body of a serpent.

In the margins of this leaf there are two scribal insertions. The detail shows that a small symbol on the edge of each box is repeated in the adjacent line, indicating where the insertion is to be made.
