Knowledge Keepers: Authorship - Artistry - Archives

To mark the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) in Saskatchewan, the University Library at the University of Saskatchewan has launched Knowledge Keepers: Authorship – Artistry – Archives, a multi-part exhibition of First Nation, Métis and Inuit related materials. Coordinated by the University Library and featuring many published materials held by the library, the physical exhibit also includes unpublished materials from the holdings of the University Archives. There is also an accompanying website which showcases Aboriginal research materials which compliments and augments the exhibition with detailed information regarding Aboriginal authors, musicians, artifacts, artwork and scholarly work. As well the site highlights our other Aboriginal themed digital initiatives.

The physical exhibition is being held in ‘The Link’ at the Murray Library on the U of S campus, and the virtual exhibition can be viewed through our website ( http://www.library.usask.ca/indigenous ). Both exhibitions showcase our collections and help educate our community about Aboriginal issues including the residential school experience. The physical exhibition will run through until December 2012, providing the new intake of students arriving at the University in the fall an opportunity to view our extensive array of resources in support of Aboriginal Engagement: Relationships, Scholarship, Programs.

 

A celebration of the Knowledge Keepers exhibition, held on the afternoon of October 3, 2012, commenced with an opening prayer led by Bob Badger, Cultural Coordinator for the Aboriginal Students. The event featured remarks from guest speakers, Kim Quinney, intergenerational residential school survivor and Dr. Winona Wheeler, Department Head of Native Studies, as well as aboriginal dance and Oskayak Isketew Drum performances.
