Now You See It: Queer Films

September 2017

Curated by: Neil Richards

Murray Library Ground Floor and Room 301

Welcome to the fourth annual exhibition of acquisitions from the Neil Richards Collection of Sexual and Gender Diversity.  Housed on the Murray Library’s 3rd floor in the University Archives & Special Collections Unit, the collection was established in 2010 to hold unique, rare and/or fragile items on sexual and gender diversity to complement the Library’s extensive circulating collections on these subjects.

A collection priority has been the popular culture of LGBTQ communities, including the representation of queer sexualities in film and television. Dating from the earliest cinematic experiments of Thomas Edison to today’s blockbusters, the film industry has had a long and tangled relationship to homosexuality and with LGBTQ audiences. There is much current academic work being done on the ever-changing images of queer characters onscreen, the lives and intents of film principals, and the reception of movies by various audiences, including LGBTQ communities.

Materials in the Richards collection can be identified through the main Library catalogue and may be consulted in the Special Collections Reading Room.
