Augie Merasty attended St. Therese Residential School in Sturgeon Landing, SK from 1935 to 1944. Merasty—a fisherman, trapper, amateur boxer, storyteller, and “Jack of all trades”-- penned his memoirs of his time in Residential School while living on the streets of Prince Albert. Author and University of Saskatchewan faculty member David Carpenter played an important role in guiding Augie through the writing process and compiling the work, seeing it to publication in Augie’s 86th year. Sadly, Merasty passed away on February 27th, 2017 at the age of 87. The book has since entered into school curriculums and inspired a province-wide community reading initiative dubbed “One Book, One Province” which aims to spread awareness of residential school experiences among the people of Saskatchewan. This small exhibit features a selection of Augie's correspondence to David Carpenter, as well as materials from residential schools around the province, and a collection of books written by other residential school survivors.
